Oh, and an alien symbiote in his spine. (Only visible under certain circumstances, see below). Under any other circumstances Jaime Reyes might be considered a typical teenager; he cares about his family, gets good grades, and has a strong sense of responsibility considering his age. In conversation he seems like a level-headed guy who does his best to be friendly and open with everyone, and while he does have the occasionally disconcerting habit of talking aloud to himself, considering he’s currently in a mental institute it isn’t all that surprising. But as anyone in Landel’s knows, appearances are deceiving, for Jaime has a secret in the form of one blue scarab-shaped symbiote grafted to his spine. It is not normally visible in any way, but when activated it emerges from his spine, ripping its way out through the skin, and creates the blue and black armour for the Blue Beetle. Then, once Jaime no longer needs the armour, the Scarab returns to its normal size and location. Shortly after this Jaime’s spine and the outline of the Scarab emit a faint blue glow, which is the only time its location can be seen. |
 | The Scarab // Khaji Da Attached to Jaime’s spine, the Scarab is the source of Blue Beetle’s abilities. Originally believed to be a ‘magic rock’, then later alien technology, the Scarab was revealed to in fact be from a symbiotic species that had been genetically altered by the Reach to become their Infiltrators. The idea being that the Infiltrator would be sent down to a planet, bond with a life form there, then prepare that planet for the Reach to harvest when they arrived. But thanks to several magical encounters, Jaime’s Scarab was activated separately from its database and its orders, allowing it to, with Jaime’s guidance, develop free will and defy its creators. It even has taken a name for itself (though Jaime still refers to it as ‘the Scarab’ out of habit) based off its activation code and assigned number: Khaji Da. Powers ► Fully powered, the Scarab provides it host with an array of abilities. It’s a lot like a superhero Swiss Army knife like that. However in Landel’s these abilities will be mostly gone, leaving Jaime with a single blade which only lasts for a short period of time and the ability to scan others in his immediate vicinity to an extent.
